Dean knows. Of course Dean knows. I mean, look at him, he can’t even look at Cas straight on when he asks “what broke the connection”? He just stares at Cas’s chest and blinks a lot. He knows why, deep down, he just needs to hear Cas say it, before he’ll believe it.
And Cas can’t even look at him when he answers, “I don’t know”.
God, seriously, these two idiots. I mean, not that I expected anything different from them — if this were the season finale, maybe — but god, all that’s left now is for them to say it already.
Remember the kid from Dead In The Water? The one who watched his dad die, who didn’t talk? Dean says “no wonder that kid’s so freaked out - watching one of your parents die isn’t something you just get over.”
Dean colors with the kid, says “I’m thinking you can hear me, you just don’t wanna talk.”

the narrative weight that’s on Dean and Cas’ relationship this season
I mean just in the first two episodes it’s fucking ridiculous:
8x01 we get “where’s the angel” “first we find the angel” and all this fucking mystery, what happened to Cas, is he really dead, what happened when Dean found him, Dean being emotional about Cas and trying to hide it, Sam saying “I’m sorry” to Dean about Cas (think about it though, he fucking comforts Dean about Cas’ “death” even though Cas is his friend too, except Cas isn’t actually Dean’s friend he’s the fucking love of his life)
and then 8x02 we get THE SCENE with A HUG and “CAS BUDDY I NEED YOU” and “KEEP THEM AWAY FROM YOU” and “I’M NOT LEAVING HERE WITHOUT YOU”, and then there’s the fact that Dean tortures his way to get to Cas, and the whole thing is so traumatic that he has PTSD induced flashbacks about it and about Cas getting left behind. And then AND THEN there’s the fact that the episode doesn’t end on Kevin and Mama Tran leaving, even though that’s part of the myth-arc and if this were any other season that would have been the teaser for the rest of the season- oh no, it doesn’t end on them, it fucking ends on a flashback to Cas slipping through Dean’s fingers at the portal out of Purgatory. Let me repeat that: instead of ending on the myth-arc, 8x02 gave that oh-so-important role to a traumatic moment in Dean and Cas’ relationship.
then, then then we get bombarded with parallels fucking everywhere the entire season, to the point that it doesn’t matter if they even fucking mention Cas because the relationship is so front and center that it’s ridiculous. Oh, and just to seal the deal, they make the cliffhanger before the spring hiatus not about closing the gates of hell and Sam’s little health issues, but about Dean fucking praying to Cas to watch out for Sammy, and asking “Where the hell are you man?” because apparently Dean and Cas’ relationship is one of the most goddamn important things in the entire season.
